Do Your Heart Good...

Pal Julianne Moore gathered some of her illustrator pals together to make a series of Valentine’s Day Cards benefiting the super awesome group Save the Children. So do some good and get yourself some awesome Valentines from myself and pals Brian Selznick, Kevin Henkes, LeUyen Pham, recent Caldecott Honoree Marla Frazee, Ian Falconer, and Rosemary Wells.

Here's a pic of mine, starring two great pals:

Thanks!

Updates...

With all the excitement from yesterday’s Geisel Medal win for Elephant and Piggie’s Are Your Ready To Play Outside?, I neglected to mention some other cool news.

Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed spent its 2nd week on the NY Times Bestseller list at #5.

In the press category, here’s a nice interview/career overview, a nice review of Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed, and a nice piece about cartooning and my work. I’ve always thought of myself as a cartoonist, so I’m particularly happy to see others do as well…

The last leg of the tour was a blast, filled with great, enthusiastic crowds, particularly in St. Louis where over 600 folks crammed into the Library to hear stories, make Pigeon headbands, and have their pictures taken with my characters.

I’ll post some pix when I get them.

Until then you can dig this cool object from the St. Louis Museum that bears an uncanny resemblance to me when my dog starts barking in the middle of the night...

Rock on!

(Now back to work on a sooper-tippy-toppy secret project... Mo' info in March...)

Sweeeeeeet!

I just got home from tour to discover that Elephant and Piggie were bestowed the 2009 Geisel Medal for Are You Ready To Play Outside?

I am honored, gleeful, touched, and embarrassed...

Congrats to the recipients of all the Honors and Medals given this year by ALA...

Back on the road...

I'm back on the road to finish up the Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed Tour, so while I'm away, enjoy some Pigeon costume pictures given to be by a fan on the last leg.

Saturday news...

2009 is starting out nicely. Thanks to you, my latest picture book, Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed has debuted at #4 on this week’s New York Times Bestseller list. What do the critics think? In a starred review, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books says the “writing is as humorously and cheerfully absurd as ever… and Willems continues to be a master at conveying an amazing amount of emotion and humor using the minimal elements of his figures’ dot eyes, dash eyebrows, and body language.”

Meanwhile, Elephant and Piggie’s I Love My New Toy! made Booklist’s book list of the Best of Booklist book list (say that 5 times fast) and Are You Ready to Play Outside? makes the Chicago Library’s list of best books for last year.

Thanks to all.

COMIX MO MIX...

Not that you can tell by my current schedule, but I plan to slow down my public appearances this year so that I finish up (and start up) some projects that stare menacingly at me, vulture-like, from their high perch on the ‘to do’ stack.

Any-hoo, I still have a bit of tour to go, but if missed me in NYC, I’ll be back on Sunday, February 8 at the Javits Center for Comic Con ’09. Sunday is Kids Day and will feature Wimpy Kids, Electric Companies, pals Lane Smith, Charise Harper, and myself.

Here’s my schedule:

11:45am

Presentation/Reading on the Kids Day Stage in the Galleria on the 4th level of the Javits Center

12:30pm

Book signing with Lane Smith at Disney Book Group booth #1721

Drop by if you get a chance.

Please note, I’m happy for you to dress up as characters from any of my books, except the latest one…

I'm Back (temporarily)

Thanks to all of the visitors, young and old, who dropped by various readings of Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed across the eastern seaboard. It was a fun, yet hectic, trip.

Highlights include (but are not limited to):

Getting several handmade kids books from fans, including this awesome one:

(James’ bio at the end of the book reads: "James is 7… He plays a lot.” It was accompanied by a photo.)

This kid who could recite the entire Leonardo the Terrible Monster freak out page from memory in one breath:

Lunch with the awesome Richard Thompson, cartoonist of my favorite comic strip, Cul De Sac.

Richard even signed a book for me with his star, Alice:

A fun chat with NPR host Michele Norris. Look for more radio stuff in the coming year.

An afternoon at a school, whose librarian, Laura Amy Schiltz, just happens to have won the Newbery Medal a year ago today. Laura speaks English so beautifully, it occasionally sounds like another language. Congrats again and thanks to Laura and her kind, crusty, and zazzy companions at lunch.

(Sorry about the PR nature of this picture... It was, in fact, taken in a vortex where no words or drawings can ever escape.)

Oh, and days and days of this:

(The full story is here.)

Thanks to you all, and I look forward to more adventures when my tour continues next week.

Now, back to work...

Game Time!

Before I make like a pair of trousers and split for the Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed Tour, here's a little something for you, the brand new Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed Game on PigeonPresents.com.

It's a fun game complete with special combo animation.

If dressing a Naked Mole Rat isn't your thing, be sure to check out the other games on the site. You can dress a Hotdog, instead. Or make Elephant and Piggie dance, or print out a coloring page.

See ya on the road!

New News, New Year, New Venues!

Good news to start off the new year. A cabal of bloggers have gotten it in their minds to cheer their favorite books with an award, called the Cybil, after Cybil Shepard, a famous children's book enthusiast and actual shepherd, which is cool in its own way*.

Any-hoo, two Elephant and Piggies have made it onto the list of Easy Reader Finalists, which means that not only are they in very good company (Kate DiCamillo anyone?), but also that for the first time I have the opportunity to lose a single award twice.**

Next week kicks off the Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed Tour. Check out the post as new venues have been added. I hope to see you if you're in the neighborhood.

2009. So far so good...

*not really...

**All kidding aside, there's nothing nicer than being recognized by such passionate fans and advocates.
