I'm off!

On a road-trip down to 'Nawlins and back.  I'll be visiting pals and making stops in Savannah, GA and New Orleans for signings.  I'll also be at ALA for a few events.

Posts will return, when I do, in July, but I'm sure The_Pigeon will continue tweeting while I'm away.

Here's a quick article in the Savannah paper about my upcoming visit.

Illustration Masters...

Monday I had great fun as a guest lecturer for pal Rebecca Guay's Illustration Master Class along with pal Peter DeSeve and James Gurney (from whom I stole a few of this post's images).

Rebecca Guay, Peter DeSeve, & myself with Chinese takout boxes.

It was much more fun that I could have imagined.  The students were top notch and nice as could be.  Among the faculty were pals like Scott Fischer and Adam Rex plus loads of brilliant artists I hadn't met yet.

Peter's lecture was funny and well drawn (it's always fun to hear him speak), the crowd was nice to me (especially when I mentioned the comics of Charlie Brown as a Teenager that I used to read.  They were called Spiderman), and James Gurney's talk on color literally blew my little popcorn mind. Crazy, interesting insights and approaches.

Really tremendous stuff.  Plus, I got a few charicatures of myself.

James Gurney's doodle of me.

James's wife's lovely sketch of me at work.

Another nice doodle!

If you are serious about illustration I'd suggest looking into next year's week long series of classes and studio time.

(Here's DJ Monty's report on the event)

Oh, and here are Elephant and Piggie this last weekend at the Bronx Zoo:

The Duckling Stars!

One of my most frequently asked questions (as opposed to my infrequently asked questions) is: "Are you going to make another Pigeon Book?"

Well, today I can finally answer that question with an unequivical: YES and NO.

This time I thought I'd make a Duckling Book; and the Pigeon is NOT pleased.

Here is the cover of Pigeon and Duckling's newest adventure, THE DUCKLING GETS A COOKIE?!

I hope you enjoy this story more than the Pigeon does.

Be patient, tho'.  The book won't be released until April 2012, 9 years after the release of the volume that started it all, DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!

Here's the full report from USA Today.com (including an old photo of me with pigeons...)

Metal Work is fun!

Thanks to all who enjoyed yesterday's Red Elephant.  More news on it's larger cousin later this summer, with a fun event in October.

Here I am working on a firepit with a plasma-fire-cutting-thingie®.  Great fun!

On a un-deadly-but-fun note, thanks to Family Fun Magazine for their endorsement of Hooray for Amanda and Her Alligator! in their June/July issue.  They call the book:

"Unmistakably Willemsesque, the roomy, crayoned illustrations pop with funny details"

The Red Elephant is Red

Remember the elephant sculpture that started out as a paper maquette?

Well now it's painted.

At over three foot long it's 1/3th the size of the proposed final which will have a very swank home.

Mo' info as it becomes available.

Sculpture and metal are fun.
