I'm on sabbatical for the year.  While I will be making various appearances in Europe and beyond, mostly I'll be spending time at the home base in Paris, France drawing and doodling.

You can check out my experiments over at Universal U-Click for a comic-strip-doodle-thingie called PARIS DOODLES . The strip runs drawings, dining room dinner doodles, and photos on weekdays.

SERIOUSLY SILLY: A DECADE OF ART & WHIMSY BY MO WILLEMS is on view at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA thru mid-February.

"Comprising nearly 100 works, the exhibition surveys the full range of his prolific output from the award-winning Knuffle Bunny series, the irresistible Pigeon books, stand-alone efforts such as Leonardo the Terrible Monster and Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, as well as his early reader series, Elephant and Piggie and Cat the Cat. The exhibition will also provide an informative insight into the artist’s meticulous working process."

Fantastic Rumpus: 50 Years of Children’s Book Illustration an exhibit of contemporary children's book illustration (including some of mine) opens at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in Kalamazoo, MI on Dec. 15, and runs through Feb. 9th, 2014.

(You might spot The Pigeon trying to drive a Kalamazoo bus during the run of this exhibit- literally.  If you do, DON'T LET HIM DRIVE!)

Opening on January 27 at McDaniel College in Baltimore, MD is Beyond Words: The Artistry of Illustrated Children's Books featuring a stellar line up (and also featuring a few of my pieces.  The show runs through March.

I'll be reading and signing (mostly in French) at one of Paris' great kids bookstores, Chantlivre on Saturday Jan. 25th from 16.30h.

Chantelivre 13 rue de Sèvres, Paris
Please drop by if you have a chance.

I have a series of signings and small events during the gigantic comic book festival at Angoulême, France running from January 30- February 2. If you can make it, come on by.  The French cartoonists have a tradition of adding huge, fun drawings in every book; a tradition I'll do my best to continue...

The Belmont World Film Festival in Belmont, MA will be screening a retrospective of animated shorts based on my books entitled MO' MO' on Sat. January 18th.  Go check it out if you're in the area!

Next month during the week of Feb. 9th, First Book and the Studio will be celebrating Elephant and Piggie's FRIENDIVERSARY! An opportunity to have fun, celebrate friendship, and insure that every 2nd grader attending a Title 1 school in New Orleans, Springfield (MA), & Holyoke (MA) will go home with their very own book to read and share with family and friends.

The studio has been getting books out to kids for 7 years or so and teamed up with the really great folks at First Book 4 years ago.

And this year you can help!

If there's a title 1 school in your area you'd like to sponsor and help celebrate Friendiversary with First Book Edition of books for kids, special posters and activities, well then you can.

Mo' info about Friendiversary here (including the ever illusive "Friendiversary Dance" in it's natural environment).

Past posts from past years about Friendiversary here.

On FEBRUARY 1ST, the Eric Carle Museum will be celebrating Friendiversary with free admission to the museum and special buses bringing in kids from Springfield and Holyoke for the day.  Elephant and Piggie will be there as will author & pal Grace Lin.  Don't miss it.

Here's an interview with the Washington Post with me about making books fun for reluctant readers.  It includes an embedded sneak peek video excerpt from this Spring's upcoming Pigeon adventure, The Pigeon Needs a Bath!

The Post also had a nice piece about my books and the production of ELEPHANT & PIGGIE'S WE ARE IN A PLAY! that ran at the Kennedy Center last month.

And here's a short interview with the folks at Babble.

Arizona Onstage in Tuscon, AZ is mounting a production of KNUFFLE BUNNY: A CAUTIONARY MUSICAL on January 9.  It will run for a couple of weekends followed by a bubble party!  Check it out HERE.

Thanks to you, 3 of my books (A BIG GUY TOOK MY BALL!, I'M A FROG!, and THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! made it onto the list of last year's 100 most popular books on Amazon. I am not overly competitive, but it's always nice to beat a One Direction 100% official book...  Thanks, you!

Over at Redbook magazine, THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! made it onto a list of their favorites of the year along with 14 other really lovely books with well-written summaries.

School Library Journal picked their favorite apps from the last year and PIGEON PRESENTS: MO...ON THE GO! made their top 10.

The folks at the Nerdy Book Club selected both A BIG GUY TOOK MY BALL! and I'M A FROG! for their best early readers list! Wow. Thanks, Nerds.

Here's a lovely shot of an amazing Mosaic made by a bunch of kids who were invited to see ELEPHANT & PIGGIE'S WE ARE IN A PLAY! last month.  I snuck into DC at the end of December to see the closing of the musical and the mosaic was in the theater's lobby.  It's incredible!

Mo Willems' Pigeon

That's this month's post.  Meanwhile, I'm sure The Pigeon will keep tweeting...
