Mo Willems Studio Jan - March 2020 Update!

I'm having a ball collaborating on shows and things for MoKC, my Artist-in-Residence at the Kennedy Center
If you're in the DC area, here is what's happening now and coming up soon at the Kennedy Center:
JAZZ DOODLE JAM! featuring JASON MORAN and THE BANDWAGON!  Hosted by Mo Willems with art and doodles by YOU!

“When we doodle, that means as much as when we riff. That riff means as much as the melody, and that melody means as much to us as life.”
—Jason Moran

Jazz Doodle Jam! is an intimate jazz concert where you collaborate with the band! Sit down at a table covered with paper, grab a marker or crayon, and join host and Education Artist-in-Residence Mo Willems for a new kind of participatory musical experience. Kids and grown-ups doodle to music played onstage by Jason Moran and The Bandwagon. The band reacts and improvises to the audience’s explorations, jamming together with pictures and music, blurring the lines between artists and audience. All ages welcome!

Cannot tell you how excited I am to be working on this first of its kind Jazz/Doodle Jam with Mr. Moran and his band.  A big experiment, starring you and your crayon.

The shows run on Friday March 13 & Saturday March 14, 2020

Tickets and details HERE.

Join a symphonic fairy tale as big as a dinosaur! Once upon a time, there were three hungry Dinosaurs: Papa Dinosaur, Mama Dinosaur… and a Dinosaur who happened to be visiting from Norway! That’s the just the beginning of a hilarious, fractured, symphonic take on the classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as retold by Mo Willems. Don't miss this new classic performed by favorite performers and the National Symphony Orchestra, featuring original music composed by indie pop icon and NSO Artistic Advisor Ben Folds.

Two performances on Sunday April 19, 2020.

You can go to the MoKC site to learn more about some the events the MoKC has planned.

If you happen to be visiting the Kennedy Center, why not visit the Moonshot Studio in the new extension campus, The REACH?  There are lots of fun, hands on activities in this maker-space, including learning to draw and animate The Pigeon and his pals.

Speaking of The Pigeon, a 27-ft tall inflatable Pigeon pops up from time to time a the KC! Can you find him?

You can also download this App where The Pigeon tries to be a tour guide all around the KC.  Do you think he knows what he's talking about?

Recently, the folks at PBS's Newshour visited some rehearsals at the Kennedy Center and chatted with some of my collaborators and myself about the work we're doing during my residency.

They also asked me to answer a few questions from children:

My wife, Cher Willems, and I are long time supporters of organizations dedicated to fighting food insecurity.  Monte's March is a crazy, fun march that aims to raise money to help feed our neighbors if and when they need a little help.  This year we teamed up w/ Monte, our local DJ and conscience of the Pioneer Valley, to try and raise a million meals.

The interview is here.

I'm happy to report that Monte's March surpassed its goal!  Thank you neighbors!

There are 3 exhibits in the first 3 months of the year.  One local, one national, and one international.  If you find yourself near any of them, please go take a look.

THE PIGEON AND PALS! is a combination of an interactive, immersive experience filled with games, drawing, animation and an original art show featuring drawing and sketches from all 25 ELEPHANT & PIGGIE books.

It will run in Indianapolis at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis from Feb. 8 - May 10 2020!

There are many fun experiences for you and your family to enjoy.

Hopefully, it will spark the whole family to start writing and drawing together.

I hope you'll enjoy your visit.

You can read about the process behind the exhibit HERE.

Interested to know if The Pigeon will be coming to your town?

I've been traveling quite a bit in the last year.  With that in mind, the 4th annual show of my work to benefit a local charity features augmented magazines and catalogs along with a collection of abstractions and drawings.

My proceeds for this exhibit will be donated to Shelter Sunday, a coalition of organizations dedicated to helping the local homeless population.

More info (and details about previous benefit exhibits) can be found HERE.

There are multiple productions of all four of my plays running this winter, including the  DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS! (THE MUSICAL!) tour, which is fresh off of its SOLD OUT and well reviewed run in Washington, DC.

I'm very happy with the production, thanks to all of the hard work of the cast, crew, and creatives who gave it their all over the past 2½ years of workshopping this piece!

If a show is near your town, why not bring a kid to the theater?  You'll both be glad you did.

For the past decade first The Mo Willems Studio, and now The Mo and Cher Willems Foundation, have supported 2nd grade students in title 1 schools in Louisiana and Massachusetts by providing books and activities for them to take home as part of Elephant & Piggie's FRIENDIVERSARY Celebration

In addition to the outreach, the folks at the ERIC CARLE MUSEUM OF PICTURE BOOK ART will be celebrating with a FREE day featuring ELEPHANT & PIGGIE, activities, and FREE BOOKS for kids (while supplies last).  It's always a great big, fun party!

BECAUSE, illustrated by Amber Ren was voted a Good Reads Picture Book Finalist, thanks to you and your votes.

UNLIMITED SQUIRRELS' Who is the Mystery Reader? was names an Amazon Best Book for 2019 (ages 6 - 8)!
