NOVEMBER UPDATE!

Lots of fun planned for the month, including the premiere of my new musical at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC!

COMIX!

I'm on sabbatical for the next year.  While I will be making various appearances in Europe and beyond, mostly I'll be spending time at the home base in Paris, France drawing and doodling.

You can check out my experiments over at Universal U-Click for a comic-strip-doodle-thingie called PARIS DOODLES . The strip runs drawings, dining room dinner doodles, and photos on weekdays.

THEATER & APPEARANCE!

I'll be heading down to Washington DC for the opening of ELEPHANT & PIGGIE'S WE ARE IN A PLAY! at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.  I'm very excited about the musical that features Elephant, Piggie, a musical trio called The Squirrelles, plus a live band.

The musical runs from November 23 through the new year. Unfortunately, the KC no longer tours shows, so if you want to see this production, come see it during the run!

I'll be there opening afternoon.

Tickets are available here!

Also, the official poster for the show will be available at the Kennedy Center Gift Shop.

You can see the official school cue-sheet here.

Also, a production of KNUFFLE BUNNY: A CAUTIONARY MUSICAL will be running in Redmond, WA from November 1- 17 at the Second Story Rep. 3 words: Aggle. Flaggle. Klabble! (ticket info here

I'll be making my first appearance in France just north of Paris at the Montreuil Salon de Livre et de la Press Jeuness on December 1 from 16-18h at the Editions Kaleidoscope booth (Rdc/H5).

Je serai dans le salon du livre et de la presse jeunesse à Montreuil, sur le stand de KALEIDOSCOPE (Rdc/H5), DEC 1, 16-18 h! @SLPJ93

Looks like it will be an amazing event and I look forward to meeting my neighbors as we celebrate Chat le Chat. I hope you'll drop by.

EXHIBITS

Currently on view at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, MA:

SERIOUSLY SILLY: A DECADE OF ART & WHIMSY BY MO WILLEMS is on view at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA.

"Comprising nearly 100 works, the exhibition surveys the full range of his prolific output from the award-winning Knuffle Bunny series, the irresistible Pigeon books, stand-alone efforts such as Leonardo the Terrible Monster and Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, as well as his early reader series, Elephant and Piggie and Cat the Cat. The exhibition will also provide an informative insight into the artist’s meticulous working process."

On November 10th at 4pm The R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, MA, will have hold their opening for their annual Children's Illustration Show.  While I won't be able to make this year's event, pretty much every other east coast illustrator will be there for the party, including featured artist and pal Jon J Muth, who's work will be featured.  A few of my drawings from recent books will be on view and upstairs there's a great show of pal Rebecca Guay's.  This is an event not to be missed (here are some snaps from past years).

SCREENING!

Knuffle Bunny

The Belmont (MA) World Film Festival will be screening a retrospective of my films with Weston Woods on Saturday, November 23 at noon. It's part of a days worth of events including an appearance by the great Ed Emberley and his daughter Rebecca and the screening of the brand-spanking-new HOORAY FOR AMANDA AND HER ALLIGATOR at 10:30 am along with new films from Weston Woods. Details here.

RECAP!

I had a lovely visit to Ireland last month reading and talking about some of my books.

I met with kids and grown ups, talked books and animation, and even got to doodle all over the store window of Hodgis Figgis in downtown Dublin.

Making my doodles.  The window will be back up for the xmas season.

I got a little help from some new friends as well...
I also had a fun chat with Ryan Turbidy on the radio and I got to do some doodling at a local cafe.

This happened as UK/IRE/Australian/NZ publisher had just released THAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! and the Irish Times liked it, saying: “'Impressive inventiveness'” is, if anything, an understatement with regard to Mo Willems’s That Is Not a Good Idea!" Yikes!  Thanks, Irish Times!

NICE NEWS!

While I was in Ireland news came in that, THANKS TO YOU, the brand new Elephant and Piggie adventure, I'M A FROG! debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List at #1!

A pint of Guinness was raised in your honor. I hope you and yours enjoy pretending with E and P!

Also,

The NYTimes ran a piece about filmmaker JJ Abrams attempt to get in touch with me.  It did not work out as planned. The story continues, as basketballer Williams didn't know who JJ was.  For my part, I plan to become a NBA player, because at home I've got lots of balls and stuff...

THAT'S IT!

Mo Willems' Pigeon

That's this month's post.  Meanwhile, I'm sure The Pigeon will keep tweeting...

OCTOBER UPDATE!

Lots of fun planned for the month, including a new book, twitter chat, and a series of appearances in Ireland!

BOOKS!

October 15 is the publication date for Elephant and Piggie's newest adventure, I'm a Frog!
Gerald is careful. Piggie is not.
Piggie cannot help smiling. Gerald can.
Gerald worries so that Piggie does not have to.

Gerald and Piggie are best friends.

In I'm a Frog! Piggie has some ribbiting news! Can Gerald make the leap required to accept Piggie's new identity?

I'm real excited about this one and hope this new adventure will make you hoppy!

For those of you twitterly inclined, I'll be participating in a Q&A twitter session on release day! Here are the details:

Macaroni Kids: I’M A FROG Twitter Party

Party Time: OCTOBER 15, 1 – 2 p.m. EST.  I'll be answering questions at a special twitter account @MoWillems_Says. Join in if you can! (hashtag #Iamafrog!)

Also just released is the eBook and iBook versions of YOU CAN NEVER FIND A RICKSHAW WHEN IT MONSOONS: THE WORLD ON ONE CARTOON A DAY, my first grown up book documenting the year I spent backpacking around the year and making a cartoon every day.  It's a fun travelogue with a great intro by pal Dave Barry.  If you're an e or i reader, check it out.

"A compilation of Mo’s sketchbooks from the past two decades, this offers a fly-on-the-wall look at where the illustrator’s ideas originate...In addition to Mo’s general introduction, he briefly introduces each of the 20 sketchbooks. For instance, Mo tells us that Sketchbook 5, called “I’m Fine,” was inspired by William Steig’s The Lonely Ones (1970). Other entries include “Lazy Day Doodles,” “Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs” (now a picture book), and the hysterical “Olive Hue Show Mutts,” in which a drunk, slurring rabbit reminds adults just how hard it is to learn to read. The clean design and pastel background colors echo Mo’s picture books, and the volume will delight his numerous fans—his adult fans (but let’s not pigeonhole)—from beginning to end."
In addition, there is this lovely review of the collection in Book Page.

In the very, very flattering department, the New York Public Library has just compiled their list of the 100 most popular children's books of the past century and DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS! made the cut.  The NY Daily News has the story.

BENEFIT!

Speaking of the Carle, they are holding an auction of work from some amazing childrens book illustrators during their annual Carle Honors event in NYC on Sept. 26th.  This drawing of the Pigeon is also available.  You can bid at the Honors or on line.

Last month's convention for SCBWI in Los Angeles included an award ceremony for the winners of the Golden Kite awards and the Sid Fleischman Humor award, which this year was given to GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE DINOSAURS. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to the event, and this little appreciation may explain why:

If you live in the UK, a musical version of DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS! continues its nationwide tour.
